FLINT, MI – Today, a coalition of community organizations sent a letter to Flint City Council, calling on members to end months of delays and approve a proposal to reallocate $50,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to eliminate $32 million in medical debt for an estimated 10,000–12,000 Flint residents.

The proposal, which originally passed the finance committee on Oct. 9, 2024, was sent back to the committee by the council on Dec. 16, 2024. Now, as the council prepares for another finance committee presentation and expected vote on Jan. 8, the coalition warns that continued inaction risks jeopardizing a transformative opportunity to deliver relief to Flint families and boost the local economy.

“Medical debt is a significant burden on Flint families, often leading to bankruptcy, credit damage, and delays in seeking essential medical care,” the coalition states in the letter. “By passing this proposal, you will help alleviate these burdens, freeing families from the crushing weight of medical debt and allowing them to move forward with greater financial security.”

The letter underscores that the initiative offers an equitable and efficient approach. With no application process required, the partnership with Undue Medical Debt ensures that funds will provide direct and immediate relief to Flint residents.

“This resolution represents an opportunity for Flint to lead on a critical issue, using available resources to address a widespread problem that has only worsened during the pandemic,” the letter continues. “Your vote will make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of residents and will demonstrate the City Council’s commitment to supporting Flint families in their recovery from the financial hardship of medical debt.”

The coalition is urging the City Council to approve the proposal during this critical finance committee meeting, ensuring Flint families do not lose out on this life-changing opportunity.
