MU in the News: What’s Next in the DTE Fake Public Comment Scandal
在 Facebook 上推特

Em Perry of Michigan United was featured in the pages of Planet Detroit this week. In an article, “Will DTE face consequences for ghostwritten rate case comments?”, she reacts to the news that DTE, Michigan’s largest utility company, was found creating fraudulent comments to be read into the public record at regulatory meetings.

Tap here to join the fight against DTE and the influence of money in politics.

Here’s an extended excerpt from the story and her reaction:

“Environmental advocates are calling on Michigan regulators to deny DTE Energy’s proposed $456 million electricity rate increase after Planet Detroit reported the utility was ghostwriting comments in support of its rate hike.

Data in the PDF documents containing comments submitted by businesses to support the rate hike in late September showed that a DTE spokesperson had authored four of the documents, while several others showed textual similarities that suggested that a shared template had been used.

A DTE spokesperson told Planet Detroit that the company wrote the comments for its vendors at their request.

DTE’s actions have drawn scrutiny from the Michigan Public Service Commission, which called the comment writing “disappointing,” and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office.

“The department is not currently investigating the submitted comments, though the matter has caught our attention as we continue our work to combat incessant and excessive rate hike requests for the State’s utility corporations,” Danny Wimmer, a spokesperson for the Attorney General’s office, told Planet Detroit in a statement.

Nessel previously said that DTE’s proposed 10% rate hike for residential customers should be reduced to 2.5% and submitted a brief in October, saying the utility shouldn’t be “rewarded for subpar performance by simply dumping more money into the machine…

…Could DTE ghostwriting controversy give energy justice groups a boost?

Em Perry, organizing director for the nonprofit Michigan United, doubts that any disciplinary actions or fines by the MPSC, beyond potentially rejecting the rate increase, would be significant enough to influence DTE’s future behavior.

She said the utility’s actions underscore the need for lawmakers to pass two bills, HB 5520 and HB 5521, to prevent monopoly utilities and companies seeking government contracts from making political donations, an issue supported by the Taking Back Our Power Coalition.

“Realistically, they’re not going to face any real consequences until our legislature passes the taking back our power legislation,” Perry said, arguing that utilities have previously used their influence with legislators to defeat accountability measures like more generous outage credits.

The coalition currently has support from 22 lawmakers, and Perry said meetings are planned with 10 more. She’s optimistic that the legislation could move in the lame duck period following the general election, based on growing awareness of the campaign and engagement from constituents,

But even if the legislation fails, Perry said the effort could set up a ballot proposal for the next election to block utilities and other companies seeking state contracts from making political contributions…..”

A Conversation on Voting with Secretary Pete Buttigieg
在 Facebook 上
推特

On Thursday, October 24th, we were invited to have a discussion with Pete Buttigieg, the United States Secretary of Transportation. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how to encourage full participation for the election in Detroit specifically and Michigan in general. We also wanted to give him an “ear to the street” candid conversation on where we see the need to improve and what’s being overlooked. We were free to share our views and opinions with the Secretary.

The first issue was the connection with African American men and what we see as important factors to engage more participation in this election. Various events are taking place with the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit & vicinity, Inc’s engagement. We shared the importance of not waiting to the 11 th hour to include African Americans in the efforts to reach African Americans.

The next issue addressed was the lack of pushback from those members of the Detroit Economic Club who quietly giggled while former president Donald Trump bashed and belittled our city during his October 10th speech to members. We Detroiters who help these businesspeople thrive by buying their products were not amused.

The major issue addressed was the important and vital need for Vice President Harris to agree to visit with the Arab and Muslim communities. The race is too close to take any voting community for granted or give the impression that one is being ignored. I stressed the boost and positive response that could be generated by connecting at a meeting with leaders from those communities. I pledged to help facilitate and host such a meeting, because not committing to talking with our Arab and Muslim brothers and sisters puts all of our communities in the crossfire. Again, we stressed the importance of giving them a real opportunity to be heard and talk directly with Vice President Harris.

I truly believe Secretary Buttigieg heard us, understood the passion in our voices and will pass it along to the to the Harris campaign. It would be a vital mistake to give the impression that the largest Arab community outside the Middle East was ignored during this presidential campaign season.

MU in the News: Election Protection at ReadSludge.com
在 Facebook 上
推特

Our own Kate Mason was featured in a story on election protection at ReadSludge.com. Here’s an extended excerpt:

In Michigan, Voting Rights Groups Are Preparing to Counter ‘Anti-Voter’ Activists on Election Day

On Election Night 2020, there was commotion at the convention center in downtown Detroit, Michigan, where absentee ballots were being counted. Republican groups had called for a wave of supporters to show up at the site, and many of them raised claims of election fraud. Democratic and nonpartisan election groups dispatched volunteers to be present as well, adding to the crowds. The rush of volunteers who showed up—about double the permitted number of challengers at the site—initially flooded the counting floor at the arena, then called the TCF Center, in the throes of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hundreds of poll challengers roamed the basement where ballots were piled, with one observer urging her colleagues to “challenge every single ballot.” Some observers ignored the rule keeping their distance to an allowed 6 feet away from the counters, and began encircling tables and chanting “stop the count.” Some of those present had to be removed from the floor by police, like one challenger in a white full-face mask who yelled that the process was “crooked,” and protestors later banged on windows to the counting room. On social media, fevered claims circulated, like a photo of ballots supposedly being imported on a wagon—though the supposed proof was a snapshot of a local news photographer moving equipment.

But after election administrators worked in the tense atmosphere until Thursday at 4:30 am, the Detroit ballots were counted, the Detroit Free Press wrote. Chris Thomas, a former director of elections for the Michigan Secretary of State who worked under the administrations of both parties, worked to fact-check claims on social media, saying he was “extremely confident” in Detroit’s vote-counting process.

A couple weeks later, the Michigan appeals court rejected as “not credible” a Republican legal challenge to the counting of absentee ballots in Detroit. On Nov. 18, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers—after an initial refusal by its two Republican members—certified the election results.

Learning from the 2020 experience, election administrators oversaw a smoother ballot counting process in the 2022 midterms, ensuring that the downtown Detroit site was free of chaos. Two Republican statewide candidates who had denied the 2020 election result, gubernatorial challenger Tudor Dixon and state attorney general challenger Matt DePerno, conceded their races the day after voting.

公民参与和选举保护如何让我们的声音不被忽视
在 Facebook 上
推特

We’ve all heard the phrase “every vote counts,” but have you ever stopped to think about what makes that possible? It takes entire networks of people and systems working behind the scenes to protect your right to vote. In fact, 选举保护 is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a democracy. However, it can’t be done if people aren’t civically engaged.

Over the past several decades, there has been a dangerous decline in Americans’ understanding of and participation in key civic activities. This, along with other factors, has weakened our perception of ourselves as part of a larger social whole, our sense of duty to our fellow citizens, and our willingness to work together to solve social problems.

What Is Civic Engagement?

Civic engagement refers to active participation in the governmental, social, and community activities that shape society. At its core, civic engagement isn’t about divisive politics; in fact, many civic activities are nonpartisan, or aren’t related to politics at all. They work to improve the collective well-being of communities through social interactions and public service. Engaging civically simply means participating in larger efforts to make a positive difference in society.

This can be done in a variety of ways. Anyone can use their time, expertise, skill sets, or assets to do their part for the greater good.

Just a few examples of civic engagement include:

  • Voting and encouraging voter turnout

  • Volunteering (in any capacity, with any nonprofit organization that offers public services)

  • Advocating for solutions to social problems

  • Serving on local boards or committees that can impact decision-making and community outcomes

  • Supporting nonprofit and government organizations that serve worthy causes

Why Is Civic Engagement Important?

Civic engagement plays a vital role in sustaining a healthy democracy and addressing shared  needs. In a thousand different ways, it can:

  • Empower people to influence decisions that impact their lives and the lives of community members

  • Promote inclusivity so that all voices are represented and heard

  • Reduce or eliminate forms of inequality and injustice

  • Help communities address local, state, and national problems

By becoming civically engaged, citizens take ownership of the democratic process, which ultimately means exercising the right to communicate, advocate, and work together to improve society in various ways. This strengthens communities and fosters greater trust between government institutions and the people they serve. Civic engagement also ensures that the government and politicians are accountable for serving the needs and desires of citizens.

How to Make a Difference in Your Community With Election Protection

Of all the ways people can engage civically, election protection is one of the most critical, as it safeguards the most important democratic process of all: voting.

What Is Election Protection?

Election protection refers to the nonpartisan efforts and mechanisms put in place to ensure the fairness, transparency, and security of elections. These efforts ensure that eligible voters can cast their ballots freely and easily — without intimidation, suppression, or undue logistical difficulty — and that their votes are counted accurately and impartially.

At the federal and state levels, various organizations work to monitor polling places, assist voters with questions, and ensure that all election laws are followed. Election protection can also involve launching public education campaigns to help people understand their voting rights, as well as challenging and reversing voter suppression efforts.

Voter suppression occurs when corrupt politicians or political parties attempt to make it difficult for non-supporters to cast their ballots.

For example, some Republican politicians oppose regular voting by mail because it’s convenient and accessible, and makes it easier for socioeconomically disadvantaged Democrat-leaning voters (who often face logistical barriers to in-person voting) to cast their ballots. It also allows people to take their time and consult voter information materials right alongside their ballots in the privacy and comfort of their own homes, which encourages more informed and thoughtful voting.

To convince Americans they should reject mail-in voting, these politicians use misinformation to argue that the process is vulnerable to voter fraud, despite the fact that eight states already have a successful history of holding secure all-mail ballot elections — some, like Oregon and Washington, since the 1980s — and many others have specific allowances for voting by mail.

It’s vital to be aware of voter suppression tactics of all kinds at every level, because they are a major threat to democracy.

How You Can Help Protect Elections

There are many ways you can help protect elections and ensure the integrity of the democratic process:

  • Educate yourself and others about voting rights at the city, state, and federal levels

  • Volunteer as a poll worker (ensuring polling places run smoothly and helping voters navigate the process)

  • Become a poll watcher or monitor (observe the voting process at in-person voting centers to ensure processes are conducted fairly)

  • Join nonpartisan voter protection organizations like 密歇根联队 as a member or volunteer

  • Become a local election organizer (building social relationships and networks designed to inform and empower voters)

  • Donate to a nonprofit organization that works to protect voter rights and ensure free and fair elections

  • If you see something happening at a polling place that doesn’t look right, tap here to report it to election officials

Election protection is a collective civic responsibility that requires everyone’s participation. By getting involved, you can help maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that every citizen’s voice is heard.

Protect Free and Fair Elections With Michigan United

密歇根联队 is a broad, statewide coalition working to protect free and fair elections, reform our broken healthcare and immigration systems, care for our environment, end mass incarceration, and make essential services accessible to all.

We’re on a mission to safeguard the integrity of every election, ensuring that the democratic process remains fair, accessible, and representative of all voices. In the face of evolving challenges such as voter suppression tactics and attempts to disenfranchise marginalized communities, we stand firm in our commitment to protect the fundamental right to vote. Through proactive advocacy, grassroots organizing, and strategic partnerships, we work tirelessly to dismantle barriers to voting and advocate for equitable election laws.

Join us in our quest to empower voters, defend democracy, and create a more just and inclusive society for all. You can do this in whichever way works best for you. Consider joining us as a Michigan United member, volunteering with us, becoming a relational organizer in the 2024 election, or donating today.

Together, we can ensure that the promise of democracy is upheld and that every vote truly counts.

We’re excited to join forces with 482Forward 和 MEJC to bring together our community for a powerful event: the Play and Annual School Board Candidate Forum. This gathering will spotlight critical issues in education through engaging scenes and discussions.

Students, parents, and teachers hold invaluable insights into the realities of our schools and neighborhoods. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from those at the heart of the education system about what changes are needed—whether it’s improving school facilities, reimagining how schools should serve our communities, or advocating for equitable education for all Detroit students.

Our goal is to bring 1,000 participants into the room, including parents, students, educators, school staff, school board members, candidates, and other key decision-makers shaping Detroit’s educational landscape.

Join us between 12pm-1pm to sign in, explore resources, participate in a data walk, and enjoy artwork that champions education justice.
