Coming Soon: The 2025 Flint Food Summit
REGISTER TODAY

The Flint & Genesee Food Summit is a one-day event dedicated to fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and celebrating the vibrant local food system in Flint and Genesee County.

This year’s summit, happening Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, at the Flint Farmers’ Market, focuses on “Celebrating Leaders, Growers, Thinkers, and Eaters of the Flint & Genesee County Food System.” Michigan United is proud to support this important event as a co-sponsor.

Organized by the Flint and Genesee Food Policy Council, the summit brings together a network of food champions whose mission is to develop a resilient and reliable local food system rooted in community engagement, collaboration, and education.

The event aims to unite a diverse group of people and organizations, including local farmers and producers, food entrepreneurs and business owners, community groups working on food access and security, educators and researchers, policymakers and government officials, and passionate community members.

Attendees will have the chance to connect with key stakeholders in the local food system, learn about innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture, food access, and community development, share their own experiences and insights, and contribute to building a stronger, more resilient food system for Flint and Genesee County.

The summit will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, interactive workshops, breakout sessions, networking opportunities, exhibits showcasing local food businesses and organizations, and delicious, locally sourced food and refreshments.

The Flint & Genesee Food Summit is a ticketed event to help cover essential costs such as venue rental, speaker fees, and refreshments, ensuring a high-quality experience for all who attend.

For organizations interested in deeper support and increased visibility, a range of sponsorship opportunities is available. Sponsorship not only helps deliver an impactful event but also shows a strong commitment to building a thriving local food system.

How Administration Policies on Medicaid, Social Security, and Tariffs Will Harm Working-Class Americans
FacebookTwitter

President Trump has long positioned himself as a champion of the working class, but his executive orders and policy proposals tell a very different story. From drastic cuts to Medicaid and Social Security to economically harmful tariffs, Trump’s agenda threatens the very programs and protections that working-class Americans depend on. Here’s how these key policies would directly harm millions of families, seniors, and low-wage workers across the country.

Medicaid Cuts: A Blow to Health and Public Safety

Given his promises to increase government program efficiency — including in the Energy and Commerce Committee that governs Medicare and Medicaid — but not cut Medicare, the fact that 95% of all non-Medicare federal spending is allocated to Medicaid has led Trump to cut Medicaid funding in staggering ways.

Medicaid cuts would devastate millions of low-income Americans, particularly children, people of color, and individuals with disabilities. Medicaid isn’t just the nation’s largest public health insurance program; it also plays a vital role in crime prevention, mental health treatment, and public safety.

If enacted, Trump’s Medicaid proposals would slash hundreds of billions from Medicaid and SNAP programs, shifting more costs to states and ultimately resulting in fewer people being covered. These cuts would reduce access to mental health and substance use treatment — services that are crucial to reducing crime and keeping communities safe.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE IMPACT OF MEDICAID DEBT HERE

Medicaid provides health coverage for low-income households, in which people of color, including Black, Latino, and Indigenous families, are disproportionately represented. It also supports pregnant workers, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Consequently, people of color, children, and other vulnerable groups would be hit the hardest by cutting Medicaid benefits. Slashing funding would worsen health disparities and long-term economic inequality for these groups.

Worst of all, these attacks on Medicaid aren’t about fiscal responsibility; they’re about lowering taxes for the wealthiest Americans. The EPI notes that the Trump administration’s prior efforts to slash Medicaid coincided with major tax cuts for the rich, forcing working families to bear the burden.

Social Security Changes: Making It Harder for Seniors to Get Benefits

Trump has also supported damaging changes to the Social Security Administration (SSA) that threaten the economic stability of seniors and disabled Americans. While he claims he won’t cut Social Security itself, the proposed Trump Social Security policies and Republican plan to cut Social Security jobs would severely limit access to these critical benefits. As of early 2025, Trump’s team was considering a radical restructuring of Social Security that could reduce future payouts by tying benefits more closely to fluctuating market conditions.

Meanwhile, cuts to SSA staffing have already made it more difficult for people to access benefits, including individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations who often need the most help. Per Trump’s executive order, the SSA saw the most trenchant number of layoffs in decades, cutting more than 7,000 federal jobs. This has already resulted in backlogs, delayed processing times, and closed field offices, particularly in rural and low-income communities.

Tariffs: Higher Prices That Hit Working Families the Hardest

Trump’s aggressive tariff policies have been touted as “America First,” but in reality, they function as a hidden tax on the working class. Trump tariffs increase the cost of everything from clothing and furniture to electronics and food — costs that most American families cannot absorb easily. Those tariffs hurt consumers, and price hikes are especially punishing for low-income and working-class families, who spend a larger share of their income on consumer goods.

The Center for American Progress warns that this policy has not revived American manufacturing as promised. Instead, the impact of Trump tariffs has sparked retaliatory tariffs from other countries, increased production costs for US businesses, and led to job losses in industries that rely on imported parts and materials.

Worse, tariffs not only act as a regressive tax but also slow economic growth and disrupt global supply chains, leaving American businesses less competitive. Despite these consequences, Trump has doubled down in his efforts to move forward with tariffs.

You Can Fight Trump Policy Agendas That Leave Working Americans Behind

While Donald Trump often claims to be fighting for the forgotten American worker, his actual policies tell a starkly different story. His policies serve the interests of the wealthiest Americans and large corporations — leaving working-class families to foot the bill.

However, you can do your part to stand up for working-class America. Getting involved with social justice nonprofit efforts can not only make your voice heard but make local and state leaders enact legislation and policies that truly serve the forgotten American worker. If you live in Michigan, Michigan United wants to hear from you.

Fight for Working-Class Rights With Michigan United

Michigan United is a broad, statewide coalition working to reform our broken health care and immigration systems, protect our environment, end mass incarceration, and make essential services accessible to all.

We are at a critical moment in our nation’s history as we prepare to confront the troubling realities of our political climate and Trump’s executive orders. Our democracy and basic rights are under siege. If you’re wondering what you can do, Michigan United is here for you. We have campaigns in place to protect Michiganders from all forms of injustice, which means you can make a difference in the areas that matter to you, right here, all in one place.

The Trump administration is attacking everything we care about. We are working to build a home for Michiganders. We are a hub for people-centered leadership development, issue organizing, and civic power-building. We are movement builders.

Examining the hate trying to divide us at a ”Bad Faith” movie screening in Westland
Facebook
Twitter

Michigan United was out registering voters and listening to opinions at a recent screening of “Bad Faith”, a movie about how the Right is trying to use God to divide us through Christian Nationalism. The screening took place at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Westland.

Bad Faith is a full-length documentary that examines how Christian Nationalism threatens American democracy. Combining historical footage with investigative reporting, the film exposes the hidden political strategies aimed at promoting authoritarianism through religion.

The film features religious leaders, historians, state lawmakers, journalists, and political activists. Many of these experts have dedicated their careers to fighting the influence of Christian Nationalism. Through their perspectives, the documentary explores how political and religious forces have fueled division in the country.

Central to the story is Paul Weyrich, a political strategist who founded the Council for National Policy (CNP), a secretive organization. With its backing, Weyrich helped merge conservative Evangelical groups with the Republican Party, creating a movement with the goal of undermining democratic principles.

Bad Faith aims to raise awareness about the dangers of political extremism and encourage citizens to engage in the democratic process by voting.

We’re excited to join forces with 482Forward at MEJC to bring together our community for a powerful event: the Play and Annual School Board Candidate Forum. This gathering will spotlight critical issues in education through engaging scenes and discussions.

Students, parents, and teachers hold invaluable insights into the realities of our schools and neighborhoods. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from those at the heart of the education system about what changes are needed—whether it’s improving school facilities, reimagining how schools should serve our communities, or advocating for equitable education for all Detroit students.

Our goal is to bring 1,000 participants into the room, including parents, students, educators, school staff, school board members, candidates, and other key decision-makers shaping Detroit’s educational landscape.

Join us between 12pm-1pm to sign in, explore resources, participate in a data walk, and enjoy artwork that champions education justice.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, we were at Mumford High School in Detroit for a public hearing of Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). The MPSC is the utility regulator for the state of Michigan. DTE, one of the worst utility providers in the nation, wants another $456.4 million rate hike.

We think enough is enough. We’re already facing skyrocketing bills and endless power outages. DTE is a company more focused on paying off politicians than fixing its failing grid.

Political Violence, The RNC, and Our Future

                  Facebook
                  Twitter

                  Overall Communications Strategy

                  • Keep the focus on the future we want.
                  • Contrast our message of hope and community with the violence of the moment, while reminding the public who is instigating violence and division.
                  • Focus on organizing as the way we unify people, including deep canvassing.
                  • Use our resources and refocus the conversation on the two futures at play in this election.
                  • Be smart about what you post on social media, even if it’s on a private account.

                  Topline Talking Points

                  • Michigan United brings people together across differences for a country where we all belong, no matter our race, gender, religion, or ZIP code. That’s what organizing is all about.
                  • In this dangerous moment, we are doubling down on hope. We believe in our vision of the future, and we are working for a country where political violence isn’t the reality.
                  • We condemn political violence of any kind.
                  • We condemn the violent attack at the Trump rally this weekend and the violent rhetoric that followed.
                  • We urge accountability for violent actors or those who threaten or undertake political violence.
                  • We invite everyone to join us in committing to nonviolence and a democracy that settles differences peacefully.
                  • We call on Donald Trump and the GOP to reject anyone who incites, threatens, or commits acts of political violence.
                  • The violent rhetoric from Trump and the MAGA movement have brought us to a dangerous precipice in America.
                  • Trump and the MAGA movement’s drumbeat of violent rhetoric that encouraged the Jan. 6 insurrection, white nationalists in Charlottesville, and violence against political enemies must end.
                  • At the RNC, Trump will rally his party around his vision of the future: the Project 2025 plot to take over the federal government and to advocate for its “rule of law” crackdown on opponents. We call on people across the political spectrum to reject the political violence inherent in Project 2025 and its attack on our families, our freedoms, and our future.
                  • This election is about two futures:
                  • Trump’s future will divide our country and create a climate of fear and insecurity for the majority of Americans. In the future where Trump wins, he will drive our country into a spiral of unprecedented political violence;
                  • In the future where Biden wins, threats and acts of political violence will decline and we can better organize our vision for our communities.

                  More Details

Michigan United brings people together. We call on everyone to recommit to nonviolence and for Trump and the MAGA Republicans to disavow political violence.

                  • Michigan United believes in bringing people together across differences of race, place, gender, and background to work for solutions to our common problems. Through organizing, we can heal our divisions.
                  • We are organizing for a country where people’s basic needs are public goods. We push back when politicians try to hand over our well-being to greedy corporations and expose their agenda. We want the public, not a rich and powerful few, in control of our workplaces. We want the ultra-wealthy and corporations to pay their fair share. And we want a real democracy in which we all have a say, no matter what we look like or where we are from.
                  • Through our deep canvassing program and other tactics, we reach out with empathy to those who disagree with us.
                  • We condemn political violence of any kind, including the violent attack at the Trump rally this weekend–and the violent rhetoric that followed.
                  • We call on Trump, the MAGA Republicans, and the people and corporations who fund them, to reject anyone who incites, threatens, or commits acts of political violence.
                  • Trump himself, personally, repeatedly uses Nazi rhetoric against immigrants and the people he perceives as his enemies.
                  • Examples: He says that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country,” and that his political opponents are “vermin” that he will “root out.”
                  • He talks about his next term in terms of “revenge” and “retribution.”
                  • In his first term, he stoked political violence repeatedly.
                  • On January 6 when he lost the last election, he instigated the attack on the Capitol and expressed his deep admiration for the attackers.
                  • Before that, he called the Neo-Nazis and White Christian nationalists who later plowed a car into protestors and murdered Heather Heyer, “very fine people.”
                  • MAGA Republican candidates and officials excuse and encourage political violence:
                  • For example, Sen. Cotton egged on vehicular manslaughter against protestors.
                  • The Christian nationalists encouraged by Trump cast their opponents as being in league with the devil and use religious language to justify any action against Trump’s opponents, including murder.
                  • Example: North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson told an audience in a small-town church last month that “some folks need killing,” including members of the left.
                  • And right now, Trump and his allies are plotting a massive assault on our families, our freedoms, and our futures under Project 2025, including using military violence against people who disagree with him.
                  • Project 2025 calls for using the military against protestors.
                  • The leader of the behind-the-scenes work on Project 2025 implied violence if their plot met resistance. Kevin Roberts said: “We’re in the process of a second American revolution, which will remain bloodless…if the left allows it to be.”
                  • Many of the corporations who promised to stop political donations to election deniers after the political violence on Jan. 6 have resumed those donations, including UnitedHealth Group.
                  • We must not let Trump and his allies use this weekend’s despicable act of violence to escape responsibility for what they have done or what they plan to do. Trump wants a “revenge term” and we have to pick a different future at the ballot box.

The RNC and the Two Futures

This election is about two futures: the one we can work for under Biden, and the future that Trump wants for us.

Note: We have a larger narrative toolkit prepared on the two futures that details our vision, the Trump vision, and what we can work towards under Biden/Harris. Below are short RNC-specific talking points.

Our Future Michigan United is working for a people’s economy and society–a place where all of us, of all genders, races, and backgrounds can thrive. We’re working for:

                  • an economy that serves the needs of poor and working class people, not billionaires,
                  • a real multiracial democracy,
                  • racial and gender justice, and
                  • a world where we put people and the planet first, not profits for a few.

We believe organizing is the path to the change we want, AND voting lets us choose the organizing terrain.

                  The RNC and Their Future

                  • We already know Trump will be the Republican nominee. The RNC is about Trump rallying his party and the MAGA movement around his plot for a takeover of the federal government–Project 2025.
                  • His plan is an assault on our families, our freedoms, and our future. It’s an agenda designed to divide, attack, and control poor and working class people to enrich Trump, billionaires, and greedy corporations.
                  • This plot is part of the same plan–and funding–that packed the Supreme Court with billionaire-backed MAGA justices. It’s part of the same plan that led to the MAGA justices on the court overturning Roe v. Wade and turning our health and safety over to greedy corporations.
                  • They want to cut overtime pay for millions of workers.
                  • They want to cut Social Security and give Medicare over to greedy corporations.
                  • They want to gut Medicaid and stop Medicare from negotiating for cheaper prescription drug prices and end protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
                  • They want to let the government monitor people’s pregnancies and prosecute them if they miscarry, along with denying people access to birth control and abortion services.
                  • They want to carry out the biggest deportation in U.S. history.
                  • The list goes on and on.
                  • They want to divide us against each other using racism, sexism, and fear so we cannot effectively resist their plot to monitor and control every aspect of our lives and turn our country over to the billionaires and greedy corporations.
                  • Working people of every race, gender, and background must unite, block this future by voting, and by joining efforts to build the future we want.
