This Juneteenth: Join us for the First “Week of Resistance”

This Juneteenth, we’re not just celebrating our ancestors’ freedom. Our theme this year is “Resist.” We’re resisting tyranny and answering the call to defend our freedom. Join us for the Juneteenth: Week of Resistance, a powerful week-long series of events from June 13th to 21st, honoring our people’s strength, spirit, and strategy in the face of ongoing attacks on our rights, voices, and communities.

REGISTER NOW

Start the Week of Resistance at the Resistance Summit on June 13th.

Resistance Summit:

We’re kicking off our celebration with the Resistance Summit on June 13th, 10 am to 4 pm, at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 29066 Eton Street, Westland, MI. This teach-in will explain why resistance is necessary. With immigration raids on the rise, voting rights under attack, and civil liberties being stripped away, we’ll learn how to push back, protect each other, and build the power to win.

Buycott:

From June 15th – 21st, join the Buycott! From the Montgomery Bus Boycott to boycotting Target, our economic resistance has always been rooted in purpose! As programs like DEI are dismantled, we’re doubling down on supporting businesses that honor our history, hire us, and respect our buying power. Let’s move our money with intention and invest in those who invest and hire us.

Mop Up Michigan

Michigan’s government should work for people, not powerful corporations.

Whether you’ve got five minutes or five hours, your time matters. We’re going to need volunteers to collect signatures, knock doors, spread the word, and help bring this ballot initiative to life.

Care Over Cost

We hold health insurers accountable for covered but unpaid benefits. Together, we are working to transform our health care system to put people over profit.

Transformative Justice

We believe that we can keep our communities safe from crime and reduce the number of people in prison. We’re working to reform the policies of the police, schools, prosecutors, as well as reform sentencing guidelines and improve release services.

Election Protection

We’re on a mission to safeguard the integrity of every election, ensuring that the democratic process remains fair, accessible, and representative of all voices.

Immigrant Rights

Join us in our fight for a brighter future, where every person, regardless of their immigration status, is afforded the same rights, opportunities, and respect as any other Michigander.

MU Behind the Scenes: Working Together for Fair Treatment by Farmington Hills Police

Rev. Dr. Patricia Coleman-Burns of First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Farmington Hills recently led a community task force to address racial disparities in traffic stops, commonly known as “Driving While Black” (DWB). Prompted by a local report showing bias in police stops, Rev. Coleman-Burns brought in the U.S. Department of Justice to help mediate a proactive agreement with the local police department.

Here’s where Michigan United comes in. Rev. Burns also invited our own Pastor Dale Milford to join the effort as a trusted ally. With a new, open-minded police chief at the table, the collaboration was constructive and smooth. One key outcome: a refined approach to anti-bias training—just one of five priorities agreed upon for the department. This model could offer a promising framework for other diverse communities seeking similar reforms.

This is why you became a member.

Is it enough to get you to….

Coming September 6: Our Mental Awareness Back-to-School Rally & Concert

REGISTER & MORE HERE

Mark your calendar! On Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, Michigan United and community partners invite you to Identifying Triggers 2: Back-to-School Mental Health Awareness Rally & Concert at Saginaw Middle School, 3100 Webber St. Join us from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. as we celebrate youth and families with resources, conversation, and community care.

Presented in partnership with The Remnant Org, Saginaw Public Schools, Solutions Behavioral Health, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – Saginaw Chapter, this event features a dynamic panel: Brian Pruitt, George Copeland, Dr. Pamela Pugh,

Dr. Twannie Gray, Assegid Mersha, and Ken Whittaker. Together, they’ll share strategies for recognizing triggers and strengthening mental wellness at the start of the school year.

The day will also include live music from international recording artist Sharrie Williams alongside talented local performers. Families can enjoy raffles and school supply giveaways, free food, free haircuts, paint therapy, yoga therapy, and a Kids Zone with games and face painting.

Thanks to the generosity of Solutions Behavioral Health, two full scholarships will be awarded to uninsured individuals, providing one year of treatment at no cost.

Want to support this important work? Sponsorships are available: Champion ($2,000), Advocate ($1,000), Supporter ($500), and Community Friend ($250). All presenting sponsors are already confirmed. Vendors can participate with a $100 contribution.

This event is free and open to the public. Don’t miss it—see you on Sept. 6 in Saginaw!

We do things like this all the time.

Join us for Trees of Liberation Day this Wednesday

“This space is an invitation to slow down, breathe, and come back to what grounds us,” said Micah Whittaker of Michigan United. “We’re bringing together faith leaders, community advocates, and movement partners to pause the grind and reconnect with our values and our purpose,” said Micah Whittaker, Michigan United staff member and the event organizer.

Join us for Michigan United’s Trees of Liberation Day, a gathering designed to restore peace, reflect on democracy, and root ourselves in care, collaboration, and movement-building.

Throughout the morning, we will share restorative practices such as yoga, meditation, and sound healing. Faith leaders will offer reflections from diverse spiritual traditions, creating space for us to reflect and be present. As Whittaker noted, “Liberation is something we root in our connection to the land, in our spirit, and in one another.”

A highlight of the day will be the Tree Decorum, where each organization will decorate a tree with messages of hope, resistance, and remembrance—lifting up their work and our collective togetherness. In addition, there will be opportunities for movement-building conversations, rest, and genuine reconnection across cultures and perspectives.

This is a faith-friendly, movement-focused, and nonviolent space, open to all who believe in love, care, and collective liberation. We invite you to:

  • Attend and bring members of your community
  • Volunteer or share wellness resources
  • Offer in-kind support like snacks, drinks, or supplies

“As we come together under the trees, let’s ground ourselves in care, collaboration, and movement building,” Whittaker said.

MU in Flint: what Happened at Last Night’s Justice Assembly Meeting

Even though it was hot, we still had the Flint Justice Assembly—and it went really well! Despite the heat, 19 of our 31 signups came to the event; our thanks to them.

At the event, Sebastian James, Data & Technology Manager at MU presented on the Big Beautiful Bill Act. He used a new and cool A.I. tool that helps answer questions about it.

Then Adonis Flores, MU’s Training Director, reminded us how to have good one-on-one conversations and even showed us how it’s done. Thanks to both of them for making everything clear and helpful.

We want to say “congratulations” to the 21 people who finished the Organizing 1.0 training. If you’re interested, Organizing 1.0 is learning about community power, telling our stories, and connecting with our neighbors. Eight of our supporters received a special shoutout and certificates of completion!

Thanks to everyone who was part of it—you’re helping us do amazing things together!

PS: Big shoutout to Charles for helping out, especially for giving a ride to one of our leaders and a new friend who wants to join.

19 people came out in 90-degree heat to change their community.

Here’s another way to do it too:

Coming Soon: The 2025 Flint Food Summit
REGISTER TODAY

The Flint & Genesee Food Summit is a one-day event dedicated to fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and celebrating the vibrant local food system in Flint and Genesee County.

This year’s summit, happening Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, at the Flint Farmers’ Market, focuses on “Celebrating Leaders, Growers, Thinkers, and Eaters of the Flint & Genesee County Food System.” Michigan United is proud to support this important event as a co-sponsor.

Organized by the Flint and Genesee Food Policy Council, the summit brings together a network of food champions whose mission is to develop a resilient and reliable local food system rooted in community engagement, collaboration, and education.

The event aims to unite a diverse group of people and organizations, including local farmers and producers, food entrepreneurs and business owners, community groups working on food access and security, educators and researchers, policymakers and government officials, and passionate community members.

Attendees will have the chance to connect with key stakeholders in the local food system, learn about innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture, food access, and community development, share their own experiences and insights, and contribute to building a stronger, more resilient food system for Flint and Genesee County.

The summit will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, interactive workshops, breakout sessions, networking opportunities, exhibits showcasing local food businesses and organizations, and delicious, locally sourced food and refreshments.

The Flint & Genesee Food Summit is a ticketed event to help cover essential costs such as venue rental, speaker fees, and refreshments, ensuring a high-quality experience for all who attend.

For organizations interested in deeper support and increased visibility, a range of sponsorship opportunities is available. Sponsorship not only helps deliver an impactful event but also shows a strong commitment to building a thriving local food system.
