MU in the News: The Fight for Gun Violence Prevention in Michigan

From 9&10 News.com, 11/25/25:

Task force advocates for temporary gun storage services in Michigan

LANSING — Michigan’s newly issued gun violence report is putting forward a set of proposals for state agencies and lawmakers to consider.

The recommendations include raising the state’s firearm purchasing age to 21, banning the possession of assault weapons and creating a legal framework for temporary gun storage services.

“Deaths from firearms affect all of our communities — this is something that is going to take all of us in order to move the needle,” said Jessica Roche, managing director of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention.

Roche is part of the Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, which is made up of public health experts, law enforcement and community leaders.

Researchers in the task force suggest that lawmakers prioritize passing civil immunity protections for retailers that offer a temporary gun storage service.

“A space where firearm owners can store their firearms outside of the home for any reason is life changing and could be life saving in some situations —or just convenient,” Roche said.

Gun stores or ranges that might offer this service say that current Michigan law leaves them open to potential liability concerns.

Michigan United Condemn’s the Taylor Police Department’s Agreement with ICE, Citing Community Harm and Legal Risk

TAYLOR, MI – In response to the Taylor Police Department entering into an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Adonis Flores, Training Director at Michigan United, issued the following statement:

““We are deeply disturbed by the Taylor Police Department’s decision to partner with ICE through the 287(g) Task Force model, the most aggressive and problematic form of this federal program. This agreement invites racial profiling, wastes local tax dollars, and endangers the safety and trust of our communities.

“Taylor is choosing to spend its own local resources to do ICE’s work, without reimbursement, while risking costly legal liability and violating residents’ constitutional rights. This policy undermines public safety by driving immigrant families into the shadows and discouraging victims and witnesses from coming forward.

“The Task Force model was rightly discontinued in 2012 after the Department of Justice exposed widespread racial profiling and civil rights violations. Reviving it now, under pressure from Trump’s latest executive orders, is not about safety. This is about fear and control.

“By voluntarily participating in this program, the Taylor police department is complicit with an administration that disregards court orders and violates the Constitutional right to due process, as evidenced by the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father legally present in the U.S. who was kidnapped by ICE and sent to a concentration camp in a foreign country, without due process.

“We call on Taylor police and city government officials to uphold the constitutional rights of its residents and refuse to collaborate with a president who has no respect for the Constitution. The Taylor City Council must immediately review and rescind this agreement.

“Michigan’s communities are strongest when we invest in trust, not in surveillance and deportation. Every local leader should stand up against this harmful collaboration and affirm that everyone, regardless of immigration status, deserves dignity, safety, and justice.”

MU in the News: “Resist: Juneteenth 2025” in the Detroit News
FacebookTwitter

The Detroit News covered our “Resist: Juneteenth 2025” events over the weekend. Please read an extended excerpt from the story. Read the full version here.

This year, Michigan United’s annual Juneteenth celebrations will be marked by a “Week of Resistance” around Metro Detroit to denounce President Donald Trump’s actions against immigration, health care as well as diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives nationwide.

Michigan United is a statewide organization of churches, labor and community groups dedicated to democracy and ensuring the protection of civil rights. Each year, members gather to celebrate Juneteenth, a commemoration of the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declared enslaved people in the Confederate states free.

In place of the typical atmosphere of celebration the holiday carries all across the country, community members are gathering to oppose “Trump administration’s unprecedented attacks on civil rights,” Michigan United organizers said Friday.

“This is to show people they can rise up,” said Micah Whittaker, Michigan United’s community engagement director. “This is our time to celebrate something bigger than us.”

Mop Up Michigan

Michigan’s government should work for people, not powerful corporations.

Whether you’ve got five minutes or five hours, your time matters. We’re going to need volunteers to collect signatures, knock doors, spread the word, and help bring this ballot initiative to life.

Care Over Cost

We hold health insurers accountable for covered but unpaid benefits. Together, we are working to transform our health care system to put people over profit.

Transformative Justice

We believe that we can keep our communities safe from crime and reduce the number of people in prison. We’re working to reform the policies of the police, schools, prosecutors, as well as reform sentencing guidelines and improve release services.

Election Protection

We’re on a mission to safeguard the integrity of every election, ensuring that the democratic process remains fair, accessible, and representative of all voices.

Immigrant Rights

Join us in our fight for a brighter future, where every person, regardless of their immigration status, is afforded the same rights, opportunities, and respect as any other Michigander.

Juneteenth 2025 is Coming: Seven Days of Resistance is Three Weeks Away

This Juneteenth, we’re not just celebrating our ancestors’ freedom. Our theme this year is “Resist.” We’re resisting tyranny and answering the call to defend our freedom. Join us for the Juneteenth: Week of Resistance, a powerful week-long series of events from June 13th to 21st, honoring our people’s strength, spirit, and strategy in the face of ongoing attacks on our rights, voices, and communities.

REGISTER NOW

Start the Week of Resistance at the Resistance Summit on June 13th.

Resistance Summit:

We’re kicking off our celebration with the Resistance Summit on June 13th, 10 am to 4 pm, at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 29066 Eton Street, Westland, MI. This teach-in will explain why resistance is necessary. With immigration raids on the rise, voting rights under attack, and civil liberties being stripped away, we’ll learn how to push back, protect each other, and build the power to win.

Buycott:

From June 15th – 21st, join the Buycott! From the Montgomery Bus Boycott to boycotting Target, our economic resistance has always been rooted in purpose! As programs like DEI are dismantled, we’re doubling down on supporting businesses that honor our history, hire us, and respect our buying power. Let’s move our money with intention and invest in those who invest and hire us.

More events to come. Register now.

MU Saginaw/Bay City Justice Assembly Recap: Community, Strategy, and Next Steps

Earlier this week, Saginaw and Bay City residents gathered for the Justice Assembly—a space to reflect, connect, and plan for change. Hosted by Michigan United, the event brought together neighbors committed to building a stronger political home for everyone.

Attendees reviewed the basics of power and self-interest, then learned how one-on-one conversations can strengthen our organizing. We discussed the impact of recent election results and brainstormed new local campaigns to grow community power.

Special guests included Dr. Pamela Pugh, President of the Michigan State Board of Education, who shared updates on education, and Deon Davidson from Black Voters Matter Fund, who highlighted ongoing partnerships. Brenae Arthur Jones from the Ezekiel Project spoke on the link between literacy and democracy, and Ms. Lisa Coney closed with a call to action.

Thanks to everyone who joined, shared ideas, and helped set our priorities. Stay tuned for updates, and if you need accommodations or have questions, contact us at hello@miunited.org. Let’s keep moving forward—together.
