Our 2025 MLK Day Memorial for Democracy and Awards Ceremony and our own Dr. John Duckworth were in a Detroit Free Press article on Monday, January 20th.
Following is an extended excerpt from the story. You can watch our ceremony at left.
"...A separate MLK Day event was held Monday by Michigan United, a liberal advocacy group, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, titled "Will Democracy Live Again? MLK Day Event Confronts America’s Crossroads."
Christian, Jewish and community leaders spoke in the church, noting the constitutional rights of Americans.
John Duckworth, second vice president of The Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, spoke at the live-streamed event about the importance of the right to assembly.
"If you're entering a state of dictatorship, the last thing a dictator wants is our position," Duckworth told the crowd assembled in the Detroit church. "So we must remember the importance of gathering together ... whether it be a protest, a planned meeting, labor organizing, union organizing. ... The only way we will ever be defeated is if we fail to assemble together, to understand that I need you, and you need me. We are not a bunch of independents; we are a bunch of inter-dependents."

We are a coalition of working families in Michigan fighting to pass comprehensive state legislation to prevent regulated monopoly corporations and companies seeking government contracts from making political contributions. We can no longer let them buy their way out of accountability and drown out the voice of the people!
In Michigan and all across the country, our members are fighting individual care denials and are WINNING people the care they need--and paid fo! Together, we are working to transform our health care system to put Care Over Cost and people over profit.
Relational organizing is defined as “preparing & supporting people to bring the power within their existing relationships to affect change.” In actuality it is turning a contact into a conversation and then into a person empowered to create change where they live.
