Detroit City Election 2025 Report:

Michigan United Action Candidates Prevail

DETROIT, MI — Michigan United Action (MUA) celebrates the Nov. 4 election victories by two of its endorsed candidates in the race for Detroit City Council, Denzel McCambell and Gabriela Santiago-Romero.

With 100 percent of the city’s precincts reporting, both candidates won handily: Santiago-Romero prevailed with 64 percent of the vote in the race for Detroit City Council District 6 and Denzel McCambell sailed through in Detroit City Council District 7 with 60 percent of the vote.

“These victories affirm that voters support our candidates’ commitment to protecting jobs, human rights, housing rights, and the environment,” said Ken Whittaker, director of Michigan United. “It also shows what can happen when you put real boots on the ground to help get out the vote.”

MUA campaigned aggressively for both candidates in districts six and seven.

The group:

  • Identified and enlisted 250 volunteers
  • Identified 1,054 and 1,656 voters for Santiago-Romero and McCambell, respectively.
  • Knocked 20,125 doors
  • Held 3,003 conversations
  • Contacted 15 percent of the combined district’s voters

“We’re excited about Councilmember Santiago-Romero’s continued leadership and Councilmember-elect McCambell’s transition into public service,” Whittaker said. “We’re also very proud of the work that’s been done by our team and volunteers, because nothing replaces getting out there and talking to voters.”

Two other MUA-endorsed candidates in the race for Detroit Board of Police Commissioners: Scotty Bowman won in the race for District 4 and Victoria Camile prevailed in District 7.
