Michigan United’s Environmental Justice team has worked tirelessly to hold utility companies accountable and promote energy democracy. Unfortunately, Michiganders only receive $35 for their losses during every power outage, while these companies charge higher rates. This is unacceptable, and we need to demand more.
Our goal is to prioritize the people’s interests over corporate ones, and the campaign is taking a critical step towards achieving them. Our Environmental Justice team is collaborating with the newly formed Take Back Our Power coalition to create a campaign strategy. The coalition comprises of groups from across Michigan to pass legislation making it illegal for institutions with government contracts to contribute to political spending. The legislation would prevent corporations like DTE, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Consumers Energy, and others from influencing politicians and their votes and bringing back power to the people.
The legislation has yet to be introduced, but we are launching this campaign in January. We need your help to make a difference. Join us, help us knock on doors, talk to community members, and spread the word about our campaign. Let’s hold utility companies accountable and ensure our elected officials serve the people. Join us at our first Take Back Our Power committee meeting on November 29th at 6 p.m. Don’t wait any longer – join the fight for environmental justice today!
