MU Healthcare in Flint: Launching the Improve Hypertension Health Initiative

Last weekend, our healthcare staff took part in the Improve Hypertension Health Initiative (IHHI) launch at the Flint Innovations Center. Sponsored by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Greater Flint Health Coalition, IHHI is designed to address high rates of hypertension in Flint’s most affected neighborhoods. The agenda included program overviews, introductions, food box distribution, resources for self-monitoring, and baseline health measures.

Key dates and activities are set to keep the momentum going.

Office hours are available at Triumph Church in Burton on the first and third Mondays and Wednesdays (4-6 p.m.), and at the Hasselbring Senior Center on the second and fourth Tuesdays and Fridays (8 a.m.-2 p.m.). Monthly virtual nutrition education sessions are held every second Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Plus, there’s a monthly food box pick-up on the first Friday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m.

The initiative encourages organizations to apply for funding to develop evidence-based pilot projects targeting risk factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, and smoking. Community involvement is central, ensuring programs are culturally relevant and effective. For more information, reach out to us at hello@miunited.org.
